National Summer Learning Week 2022

In order to showcase the importance of summer programming, more than fifty DCYF grantees participated in National Summer Learning Week. This week-long celebration took place in July 2022, and focused on five unique themes: Fostering Friendships, Love of Literacy & Learning, Wonders of Wellness, Summer Skill-Building, and Amazing Arts. Highlights from these events, and from programs offered by our summer grantees in general, are posted below in alphabetical order.


ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco

District 9

This summer, kids from across San Francisco got their ginga on in classes hosted by our grantee ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco (ACSF). ACSF uses Capoeira arts to unite and uplift diverse populations, and as a catalyst for building a healthy, just, and vibrant society in which people feel connected to and responsible for their community. Their slogan is a great one for youth to practice, starting at an early age and for any age: “Inspire your body. Train your mind.”

Asian Pacific American Community Center (APACC)

District 10

The Summer Learning Week Event at Asian Pacific American Community Center was a slam dunk…literally! Students invited their families to come and see for themselves what they learned at camp so far! They participated in a STEM activity, enjoyed some yummy food, and had tons of fun with an inflatable slam dunk game!

Bay Area Community Resources at Paul Revere Elementary School

District 9

For the Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) program at Paul Revere Elementary School, the last day of Summer Learning Week was also the last day of their 2022 Summer Program. They went out with a bang, complete with bounce houses, water balloon games, fun on the playground, and delicious lunch from Street Meet Taco Truck.

Breakthrough San Francisco
at SF Day School

District 2

Breakthrough SF celebrated Summer Learning Week by hosting a Visitor’s Day, showcasing how their students and teaching fellows are keeping learning alive during the summer. Visitors received a tour of science and math classes for 3rd to 8th grade students who are learning everything from how to add fractions, to how to calculate math, to how to determine the epicenter of an earthquake.

Buena Vista Children’s Center

District 9

For Summer Learning Week, our grantee Buena Vista Children’s Center at St. Peter’s (BVCC), celebrated the magic that happens during summer camp: learning, growing, and building friendships! BVCC hosted a carnival with games and prizes, and invited students’ families to come join the fun.

BGCSF Beacon Programs at George Washington Carver & Malcom X Elementary Schools

District 10

The Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco Beacon Programs at George Washington Carver and Malcolm X Elementary Schools teamed up to read their favorite fiction and non-fiction books, and provide their own connections to the stories through the arts. Students created short stories, drew themselves as characters, and highlighted themselves in their future occupations. Additionally, the Boys & Girls Club’s partner agency, Vision to Learn, brought their very cool van to Carver Elementary School and offered students free eye exams!

Cross Cultural Family Center

District 5

Cross Cultural Family Center hosted Summer Learning and Wellness Fairs at all of their sites in San Francisco. At the Turk Street site, students and their families made their own kaleidoscopes, created and played their own musical instruments, and created a giant poster about the best parts of their summer program!

Donaldina Cameron House

District 3

Donaldina Cameron House's Summer Learning Week event was all about celebrating Chinese culture and heritage. Cameron House hosted a Family Night that highlighted everything students have been learning about in their summer program: martial arts, dragon dancing, fan dancing, Chinese songs and folklore, food from around Asia, and traditional games and handicrafts.

Filipino Education Center’s Galing Bata

District 6

Filipino Education Center’s Galing Bata Program hosted their LIKHA Summer Family Fiesta at Golden Gate Park. LIKHA stands for “Likha at Imbento ng mga Kabataan para sa Hinaharap at Adhikain” - Creations and Inventions of the Youth for the Future and their Goals. The Galing Bata Summer Camp focused on exposing students to different kinds of arts, particularly Filipino arts, in theatre, crafts, music, dance, cooking, and science. At the LIKHA Event, Galing Bata showcased what their students learned and created over the summer, highlighted their strengths through student awards, and hosted a very fun hands-free watermelon eating contest!

Good Samaritan FRC Beacon Program
at Willie Brown Middle School

District 10

What does Summer Learning Week look like at the Good Samaritan Family Resource Center's Beacon Program at Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School? Learning about biomes and ecosystems and the animals and plants that live in them, creating posters and dioramas about these biomes, and visiting the Oakland Zoo and California Academy of Sciences. These lucky students go on two field trips every week!

Hunters Point Family

District 10

San Francisco got lucky with a gorgeous day to celebrate summer learning, and our grantee Hunters Point Family went to Gilman Playground to make the most of it! They created posters about the importance of choosing water instead of sugary beverages, played kickball, and had a healthy lunch.

Jamestown Community Center

District 9

Jamestown Community Center brought it at their Summer Learning Week event at Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8 Community School: science experiments, a tie-dye t-shirt station, arts & crafts, dodgeball, soccer (at the very cool Street Soccer USA mini-pitch!) a gallery walk of all of the field trips they went on this summer, and a performance for families.

Mission Education Projects Inc.

District 9

MEPI overachieved for Summer Learning Week: they hosted a different event every day, with MEOPARDY as their finale: Jeopardy! with topics that students studied in the course of the MEPI Summer Program. Another highlight: students created This Is Us artwork with beautiful drawings about each student's heritage that will become a permanent decoration in MEPI's new home base in the Mission District.

Mission Graduates at Bessie Carmichael

District 6

Mission Graduates at the Bessie Carmichael Beacon celebrated summer through STEAM Exploration! They had dinosaur and artifact discoveries, learned about marine biology and the animal kingdom, experimented ways to save the planet and recycle, and explored different cultures and sports. Students were also able to enjoy sunshine while kayaking, sailing in the bay, and watching a Giants game!

Mission Graduates at Sanchez Elementary School

District 8

At the Mission Graduates program at Sanchez Elementary, the last day of Summer Learning Week was also the last day of their 2022 summer program. To celebrate, Mission Graduates hosted a talent showcase, a gallery walk of all the work they did this summer, and a pizza and ice cream party in the playground!

Mission Graduates at Flynn Elementary School

What a fun Summer Learning Week celebration at the Mission Graduates program at Flynn Elementary School! Students got scientific at STEM stations, made art, got their faces painted, played games, jumped in bouncy houses, and had a yummy pizza party!

Multi-Agency Event at African American Art & Culture Complex

District 5

Staff and students from Mo'Magic SF, the Village Project, the Buchanan YMCA, Don Fisher Clubhouse, the San Francisco Public Defender's Office, and the San Francisco Human Rights Commission (apologies if we missed anyone!) came together to celebrate the importance of keeping kids learning, safe, healthy, and having fun during the summer, all while making ice cream and slime, playing games, eating delicious food, and receiving free books to take home.

Our Kids First

District 11

The students at Our Kids First made a big splash during their Summer Learning Week event...literally! They celebrated the Wonders of Wellness Summer Learning Week theme by having a fun swim day at Sava Swimming Pool.

Street Soccer USA San Francisco

CITYWIDE

Street Soccer USA offered 100% free soccer programs in six neighborhoods in San Francisco this summer. Street Soccer’s programs, which also operate in the school year, create safe places to play, are led by caring coaches, and offer an evidence-based curriculum that builds important skills including communication, creativity, collaboration, self-confidence, independence and mutual respect for one’s self and others.

For our grantee Telegraph Hill Neighborhood Center / TEL HI, Summer Learning Week and their summer program as a whole has been all about learning, being active, gardening, making new friends, and having lots of fun!

Urban Ed Academy

District 10

As the National Summer Learning Association states, research confirms that the arts prepare students for school, life, and the workplace. Urban Ed Academy took that and ran with it for Summer Learning Week, hosting a painting activity for their students.

YMCA SF Thingamajig Convention

The YMCA of San Francisco knows how to celebrate Summer Learning Week: for the 8th year in a row they hosted their Thingamajig Convention at the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park. This event has it all: tons of STEM stations, an invention contest, take home arts and crafts, a huge LEGO build, giant bubbles, the San Francisco Public Library Bookmobile, and fantastic staff from every YMCA branch to make sure everyone is engaged and having fun!

YMCA SF Power Scholars Academy

citywide

YMCA of San Francisco hosted their Power Scholars Academy Graduation as part of the YMCA's overall Nataional Summer Learning Week celebration. The Power Scholars Academy is the YMCA's signature summer learning loss prevention program: Power Scholars work with teachers and enrichment leaders to gain social-emotional skills, practice healthy habits, and cultivate joy of learning. Major congratulations to all of the new Power Scholar graduates!

Youth 1st

District 11

Youth 1st was the first of our grantees to host a Summer Learning Week event this year, and it was a fantastic way to kick it all off: they hosted a Family Day at Merced Heights Playground, and invited the whole community to celebrate with music, food, games, giveaways, and good times!
